The gallery’s history stretches from Johnen + Schöttle (1984 to 2008 in Cologne) to the Johnen Gallery (2004 to 2015 in Berlin). It was then taken over by Galerie Esther Schipper. The gallery opened in 1984 with Thomas Schütte and Aldo Rossi. Later came Jeff Wall, Thomas Ruff, Candida Höfer, Stephan Balkenhol, Andreas Gursky, Katharina Fritsch, Rodney Graham, James Coleman, Tino Sehgal, Roman Ondak, Yoshitomo Nara, Wilhelm Sasnal, Liu Ye, Prabhavathi Meppayil, Martin Creed, Martin Honert, Dan Graham, Martin Boyce and many more.

In 2016, the artist Karin Sander created a piece entitled “Exhibition Record” about all the exhibitions at both galleries.
